Here's what you need to know about the Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay: It's bloody, brutal, and horrendously violent. Seriously, these Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities will turn your stomach upside down. But to focus on all the gore is to lose sight of what's really important – how god damned slick this fighting game looks.

Mortal Kombat 1 appears to be a smart iteration of what we experienced with MK11, with familiar movesets mixing with new combos to create truly dazzling battles. With dense environments and detailed stages, beautiful character models, and dazzling cinematics, it's hard to turn away from the gameplay NetherRealm is putting forward here.

The studio's chief creative officer says that "Mortal Kombat 1 marks a new beginning for the franchise", with Ed Boon noting that MK1 will feature an "original storyline and fresh take on classic characters." Speaking of classic characters, some legendary fighters will be returning to explore this reborn Mortal Kombat universe – created by Fire God Liu Kang – with all-new backstories and twists on classic rivalries.

Additionally, NetherRealm has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will have rollback netcode to support a smoother online gameplay experience

Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Fighter System

NetherRealm is introducing a brand new way to play Mortal Kombat, through the introduction of the Kameo Fighter system. This is designed to bring "a unique roster of partner characters into the mix," as series creator Ed Boon explains it. What this essentially means is that you'll be able to team characters from the main roster up with a selection from a special secondary roster – based on a klassic versions of the characters pulled from over 30 years of Mortal Kombat history – and call them into battles to fight along side you.

You could team up two Sub Zero variants, or Scorpion with Goro (whatever combination you want), and then make use of special offensive and support-based moves. You'll use one button actions to activate attacks from your Kameo fighter, all of which can be used pretty much anytime you want to create new and unique combos – including devastating Fatal Blows, brutal Fatalities, and defensive Breakers. Oh, and don't worry about imbalance or attack spam, there's a meter governing usage of Kameo fighters.

Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Fighters confirmed:

  • Goro
  • Kano
  • Kung Lao
  • Jackson "Jax" Briggs
  • Scorpion
  • Sonya Blade
  • Stryker
  • Sub-Zero

There's still plenty of characters to be revealed as we approach the September release date – Mortal Kombat 12 launched with 25 fighters back in 2019, which was later expanded to 37 through two Kombat Packs and a story expansion.

The confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 character list is:

  • Johnny Cage
  • Kitana
  • Kung Lao
  • Liu Kang
  • Mileena
  • Raiden
  • Scorpion
  • Shang Tsung (pre-order exclusive)
  • Sub-Zero

Mortal Kombat got Jean-Claude Van Damme

Mortal Kombat 1 is muscling up with the vocal talents and visage of the legendary Jean-Claude Van Damme. Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2023 alongside a gnarly new gameplay trailer, you'll be able to reskin MK regular Johnny Cage as another famous action hero and perform all manner of brutal takedowns. Jean-Claude Van Damme tearing a guy's head off and, along with it, his spine? Say no more. This is a dream come true for NetherRealm founder Ed Boon, who had hoped to get Van Damme to star in the original Mortal Kombat all the way back in 1992.

NetherRealm is yet to detail the shape of Mortal Kombat 1 DLC, although it has been confirmed that Kombat Packs will be launching in the future. Included in the Premium and Kollector's Edition versions of the game is early access to six new playable characters and five new Kameo Fighters, so expect this to be just the beginning. This DLC rollout follows a similar trajectory to MK1's 2019 predecessor, with Mortal Kombat 11 gaining six additional characters as part of the first Kombat Pack release shortly after launch, which was later followed with the Aftermath story expansion and a second Kombat Pack.
